NiijimaCharacteristic

Niijima island is about 2 hours and 30 minutes by high-speed boat, and 40 minutes by plane. It is one of Japan’s leading surfing islands, attracting surfers from all over the world who is looking for powerful waves. In addition, there are many buildings and moyai statues made of koga stone, which are rare in the world, on the island. The moyai statue in front of Shibuya Station was also donated by Niijima.

Moyai statues

Niijima island is dotted with “Moyai” statues, which are modeled after the moai statues of Easter Island, and these statues are made of Koga stone, a specialty of Niijima island. The word “moyau,” from which the moyai are derived, means “joining forces” in the island dialect, and is a familiar symbol of cooperation in the lives of the islanders.

Habushiura Coast

Habushiura Beach is a 6.5-km white sand beach on the east side of Niijima island where visitors can enjoy swimming and surfing. An observatory in the northern part of the beach offers a panoramic view of the coastline and spectacular scenery. The nearby Habushiura Campground is also ideal for outdoor activities.
